Madi Olson wins spelling bee at Lancaster School

SPELLING BEE WINNER Pictured left to right first place, Madi Olson and runner up, Andi Strege. (Submitted)

The tension filled the room Jan. 27, as the final round of the spelling bee began at Lancaster Public School. The 15 spellers in the final oral round of the spelling bee lasted until the sixth round before even one was eliminated.  Congratulations spellers.
Students in grades 5-8 started the process in January with a written, classroom round. From there, top students came together for a second written round. The best spellers from that round gathered in the cafeteria for the oral round of the spelling bee.  This year’s participants, who had advanced through two written rounds included: April Weleski, Cora Kujava, Reese Steen, Maddie Anderson, Jagger Olson, Susy Blanco, Jared Masloski, Cora Vagle, Savannah Martin, Tucker Nelson, Josie Steen, Madi Olson, Andi Strege, Mariah Olson, and Riley Sullivan.
At the end, there were two standing: Madi Olson and Andi Strege. These two spellers battled it out through many rounds, with Madi Olson, daughter of Mike Olson and Tali Olson, coming out on top. Andi Strege, daughter of Jesse and Denise Strege was runner up this year. She had taken the top honors the last two years.
Madi Olson will compete at the Regional Spelling Bee in Thief River Falls this February. Good luck, Madi!
