Lancaster, Minn. - Nick Chalaturnyk, 82, Lancaster, Minn., died Jan. 19, 2013 at Altru Health Systems in Grand Forks, N.D.
Nicholas Chalaturnyk was born to John and Maria Chalaturnyk March 17, 1930, in Gardenton, Manitoba, Canada. He was the youngest in a family of 11.
He attended school near Tolstoi, Manitoba. At 16 he began working for the Canadian Railroad. He later enlisted in the Royal Canadian Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry as a paratrooper. He worked various jobs including several years with Torro in Minneapolis and Motor Coach Industries in Pembina until his retirement in 1995.
He married Leona Masloski June 20, 1977 in Canby, Minn. They lived north of Lancaster until the time of his death.
Nick loved hunting, fishing, bird-watching, playing pull-tabs and scratch-off lottery tickets. He was an avid card player and he always had a swisher mixed for friends and family. His great-grandchildren were treated to licorice, popcorn and candy bars every time they visited.
He is survived by his wife, Leona; son Wayne (Judy) Chalaturnyk, Cold Lake, Alberta; daughters Sharon (Gerry) Prosser, Carrington, N.D., Ginger (John) LeDoux, Lancaster, Jean (Arlen) Lyberg, Lancaster, Marie (Rick) Schmiedeberg, Warren, Minn., Irene Burton, Lancaster, 15
grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Manuel, Mike, Bill, Sam and John; sisters Pearl, Ann, Sophie, Lillian, Irene and one grandson Scott.
Services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 23, 6-8 p.m. with prayers at 7 p.m.in the Austin Funeral Home at Hallock. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Gardenton, Manitoba.
