Lancaster, Minn. - Sidney Nelson, 68, Lanc., Minnesota died at Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center in Hallock Jan. 10, 2014.
He was born May 23, 1945 to Luvern and Hildur (Elfstrom) Nelson.
Sidney grew up on the family farm in Poppleton Township and attended Lancaster public school. He worked for several area farmers and also worked on the Soo Line railroad for nine years. Sidney was self employed and did a lot of painting and carpentry work. He built his own home, garage, workshop and a few other sheds and storage buildings, all from used lumber. He had lived at the home he built for 32 years.
In his spare time he did a lot of woodworking, making picture frames, bird houses, shelves, benches and many other items.  He never wanted to throw anything away because he “might just need it”.
He always had company on the weekends and would almost certainly offer them coffee, cookies and even a steak. His kindness and generousity has touched many people and he will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
Family members include two brothers, Jerry, Lancaster, Minn. and Darrel, Thief River Falls, Minn.; a sister, Geraine (Allen) Maksymchuk, Moorhead, Minn.; nieces, Faith Asper, Sharon Jaramo and Julie (Tim) Holmstrom; and a nephew, Scott Maksymchuk.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, 11 a.m. in the Lancaster Covenant Church. Interment will be in Riverview Memorial Garden Cemetery, Lancaster. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service.
Rev. Galen Nordin, presiding; Janelle Hostrup, organist and Galen Nordin, soloist.
Casket bearers will be Jon Blomquist, Darrel Dahlman, Jim Elfstrom, Dennis Lindquist, Robert Isaacson and Duane Frislie.
The Austin Funeral Home of Hallock is in charge of arrangements.
