Beatrice Henrietta (Norman) Sutherland died February 17, 2014, at the age of 95.
For the past four years, Beatrice was surrounded and cared for by the loving staff at the Kittson Memorial Nursing Home, Hallock, MN.
She was born September 13, 1918, at home in Hallock township, the only child of Gustaf Adolph and Mabel (Hendrickson) Norman.
Beatrice attended the Jerome Country School in Section 10 of Hallock Township.  Following graduation from Hallock High School in 1936, she worked as a nanny in Grand Forks until she was called home to care for her grandfather, John Norman.
On July 8 1939, she was united in marriage to Harry Sutherland at her parents’ home. During the World War II years, they lived in Cleveland, OH, where Harry worked for a military production plant, the Forker Corp.
Beatrice and Harry returned to Kittson County in 1945 and Harry began farming with his brothers on the Sutherland farm.
After the death of Beatrice’s father in 1952, the family moved to and farmed the Norman farm.  She raised chickens and delivered fresh eggs to her many customers.  Beatrice worked at the Hallock Kittson Memorial Hospital for many years.
Gardening, growing berries and canning were very important to Bea and after retirement, she and Harry shared this pleasure.
Due to failing health, Harry and Beatrice became residents of Westside Manor in 2002. Beatrice moved to the Kittson Nursing Home in 2010.
Beatrice and Harry were instrumental in starting the Kittson County Chapter of the Association for Retarded Children, serving on the state board as well as the Day Activity Center in Lake Bronson, MN.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the United Presbyterian Women and taught Sunday School.
Beatrice also enjoyed many years of friendship with members of the North Hallock Homemakers Club and the Hallock Farmers Club in the 1940s and 50s.
Beatrice is survived by four daughters: Marian Barry of Fraser, CO; Carolyn Sutherland, Bloomington, MN; Kathryn Rynning (Wayne Langen), Kennedy, MN.; Lola Sutherland (Duane Palm), Big Lake, MN; and a son, Daniel Sutherland, Alexandria, MN,  13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; four nephews: Harold, James, and Robert Sutherland and Allen Gillie; and two nieces: Mary Coffey and Ruth Krueger.
