The Kittson Memorial Auxiliary consists of 12 members with Pam Taie as President. Other officers include Vice President Sandy Alper, Secretary Geri Alper and Treasurer Carlene Cole.
The rest of the board is made up of Angela Ayala, Sharron Bedard, Donna Carriere, Mary Dziengel, Jan Koskela, Jeanne Laude, Kathy Levenhagen and Jodee Sugden.
The board once a month in the moths of April, May, June, August, September and October.
They meet to plan fundraisers and to determine where they’d like their fundraising profits to be utilized.
Auxiliary members are only asked to come to the annual meeting. So no other meetings are needed to be attended by members. Members however are asked to sell 10 raffle tickets for the fair giveaway which are only $1 a piece. The other event held annually where members are asked to participate is the annual meeting which is held in conjunction with a bake sale and pie social. This is usually held in the fall, this year it will be Thursday, Sept. 21. In lieu of baking pies or providing baked goods for the sale, members can give a monetary donation as well.
Dues to be an auxiliary member are only $2 per year. With the cost of membership and the requirements minimal, more people – men and women – are encouraged to join. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join including all the employees at the hospital.
The auxiliary gives back to the facility in a few ways. During nursing home week in the month of May, the auxiliary purchased two $20 gift certificates to Burgess’s Greenhouse and gave to two people in the facility. The drawing is held at random and involves all employees.
A Christmas Flea Market is in the works, with Loer as the chairperson of the event. The group is going to ask citizens to donate any unused and unwanted Christmas items and they will hold a sale Nov. 17 and 18 where people can purchase the items.
In August, the group will be delivering meals on wheels from the Hallock Senior Center.
In July the group will help with the Score Fore Golf Tournament sponsored by the Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center. The group will provide bars for the event, which will be held in Hallock, July 13.
Besides the fair raffle, the group will also be raffling off a quilt. The quilt which was started by Claudia Knutson-Hanson, a member of the Quilter’s Connection, Karlstad, Minn., will be finished by the group and donated to the auxiliary by Claudia’s husband, Ted, after her passing.
The quilt is done in the Churn Dash pattern and is made in the scrappy 1930s reproduction fabric. It will be a queen to king size quilt when finished.
The quilt will be given away at the annual meeting in September. Ticket will be available from any auxiliary member.
A recent purchase by the auxiliary was new silverware for the residents to use. They have also purchased furniture, blanket warmers, towel warmers and donated to the ambulance.
The board is looking into the cost of purchasing an awning for above the doorway to the nursing home so residents can sit outside without being in direct sunlight.
Another suggestion was a new podium for the lower level dining room to be used for programs.
The group is meeting again Thursday, June 8, 4 p.m. at the Kittson Memorial Nursing Home conference room.
