COVID-19 plus other illnesses, issues clogging hospitals

Hospitals are full up and down the Red River Valley and throughout Minnesota and North Dakota. While COVID-19 has been largely to blame, not all beds are occupied by those afflicted with the rampant disease.
In recent weeks, Kittson Memorial Healthcare Hospital in Hallock has held several patients who should have been transferred to larger hospitals. Notably, the facility held a patient last week for two days before a bed opened up at a large regional hospital. This has been the case around the region at times throughout the pandemic.
Medical officials at Altru in Grand Forks, Sanford in Fargo and Essentia in Fargo all said last week their hospitals are seeing an influx of COVID-19 patients.
“It’s a disease of the unvaccinated,” said Dr. Doug Griffin, Sanford Health vice president and medical officer.
