Bearcats improve to 3-0 with soggy win over Northern Freeze
By Asst. Coach
Mark Bernstrom
Friday, Sept. 16, KCC took on the Northern Freeze in this year’s homecoming game in Lancaster. The Bearcats won their first two games already this year and were looking to go 3-0. What is usually a very busy and eventful day with lots of activity was drowned out with heavy rain that continued throughout the game. This game came down to ball control and defense.
The first quarter started with the Freeze taking the opening kickoff and working their way down the field. The defense caused 1 of 4 turnovers on the afternoon for the offense to take over the ball. KCC worked their way down to the field and capped with off with a 4-yard touchdown run by Chisum Schmiedeberg. The extra point kick by Isaac Folland was good, and gave the Bearcats a 7-0 lead after one.
In the second quarter, it was it was becoming more of a struggle for either team to move the ball. Late in the first half, KCC built some momentum and scored again with another 4-yard touchdown run by Schmiedeberg. Folland added another successful extra point kick in the rain to give KCC a 14-0 lead going into halftime.
The second half became a defensive battle as both teams had a hard time getting anything going offensively in the wet and soggy conditions. The Freeze kept bringing extra bodies, and the Bearcats struggled to find rhythm in a very wet afternoon. KCC defense did the same and were able to record two interceptions to turn away NF anytime they would move the ball. The defense kept NF to 169 total yards and zero points on the day. Bearcats special teams was on point for the day with the 2 extra-point kicks by Folland, and 2 critical punts by Kaden Vig to flip the field. On a day when it was hard to move the ball, flipping the field with those 2 punts were very important.
The next game for the Bearcats is on Thursday, Sept. 22 in Baudette to take on Lake of the Woods Bears. All 7-12 grade football players are going. There will be plenty of football this night as junior high and varsity will be playing this day. Junior high will start playing at 4 p.m. and varsity starts at 7 p.m. Good luck to all players and coaches.
