Emily Rae Hellyer, 19

Emily Rae Hellyer, 19, Babbitt, Minn., and formerly of Grand Forks, N.D., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2022, in Babbitt after a years-long battle with mental illness.
Emily was born Feb. 1, 2003, in Grand Forks, the daughter of George and Rachel (Hemmes) Hellyer. She was raised and educated in Grand Forks and graduated from Central High School. Emily moved to Duluth, Minn., to attend Lake Superior College. She later lived in Babbitt and attended Minnesota North College – Vermillion campus in Ely, Minn. Emily also worked at the nursing home and Dollar General in Babbitt.
Emily was active in club and school soccer and volleyball. Emily frequently visited the farmer’s market and loved to participate in many outdoor activities such as gardening, hiking and stargazing. She enjoyed many genres of music, baking, cooking and travel. She loved all animals, but none more than her family dog, Violet, and her two cats, J and Ripley.
Survivors include: her parents, George and Rachel Hellyer, Grand Forks; sister, Mickayla Hellyer, Fargo, N.D.; grandparents, Marshal and Lorna Hemmes, Humboldt, Minn., and Henry and Linda Hellyer, Grand Forks; uncle, David (Tiffany) Hemmes, Humboldt; aunt, Heather (Michael) Mallett, Shakopee, Minn.; aunt, Paula (Phil) Schroeder, Thompson, N.D.; aunt, Sarah (Taylor) Skare, Moorhead, Minn.; several cherished cousins; best friend, Tatiana Jonk, Westbrook, Maine; and boyfriend, Kenny Viergutz, Babbitt.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022, at Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks. Visitation will begin the hour before the service in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any mental health charity.
