David William Fertig, 88

David William Fertig, 88, of Hallock, Minn., passed away peacefully at Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center on Jan. 31, 2023.
David was born to John Laurence and Alice Marie (Garceau) Fertig on Feb. 26, 1934. He lived on the family farm southwest of Kennedy until his father passed away in 1942, when he moved to Hallock with his mother and three sisters. He attended school in Hallock and graduated in 1952 from Hallock High School.
David served in the U.S. Army. He was discharged from active duty in 1959 and honorably discharged from the reserves in 1963. He was very proud to be a member of the American Legion. He shared fond memories of being in basic training with Elvis Presley.
David married Doris Jean Michalski on June 20, 1961, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Minto, N.D. They had two children, Stephanie born in 1962 and Larry born in 1964. David worked as a parts manager for International Harvester.
He was very active on bowling and golf leagues, and was very involved in St. Patrick’s Church and the Hallock Senior Center, which he was very instrumental in building and opening in 2001. He especially enjoyed calling Bingo weekly and playing cards most days of the week. He delivered Meals on Wheels. He was a very active member of Hallock Lions Club, where he was district governor and earned several service awards.
In his later years, he loved completing intricate jigsaw puzzles that he was very proud of. David lived in a 15-mile radius in Kittson County for his entire life and was a very active member in his community.
David is survived by his children, Stephanie (Donald) Fournier and Larry (Deb) Fertig; grandchildren, Alicia, Dylan and Christian Fournier; great-granddaughter, Leena Fournier; sister, Theolyn Brunton; sisters-in-law, Jackie Michalski, Vicki Flanders, Mary Burke, Lillian Case; and brothers-in-law, Dean Flanders and Ken Mitchell.
David was preceded in death by: his parents and infant brother Larry; as well as his wife, Doris, in 2011; sisters Mona Fertig and Jeanne Olson; brothers-in-law, Gordon Olson, Eben Brunton, Lewis Jorgenson, Jerome Michalski and Brian Klitz; as well as sisters-in-law, Fran Michalski, Elsie Klitz and Marlene Jorgenson.
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, Aug. 25, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Hallock. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service.
