Kennedy City Council once again has a vacant council seat

By Margie Holmgren
The Kennedy City Council accepted the resignation of Councilor Ross Hanson at their Monday, Feb. 12 meeting.
Hanson regretfully resigned from his council position as his employment status is requiring him to move out of Kennedy.
“Can we ask someone who was interested last time?” asked Councilor Henry Escarno.
City Clerk Melissa Woinarowicz will reach out to the other individual who was interested and see if they would fill out the position for this year.
Hanson’s term wasn’t up until December 2026 so his seat will be on the ballot this fall to permanently fill his spot for the remaining two years. Other council members up for election this fall will be Jody Bowman and Jon Turn for four-year terms each.
Part-time Maintenance
The city council discussed options for filling their maintenance position. Having received no applications for a full-time person, the council discussed hiring a part-time employee. This employee would read water meters and do other maintenance as needed.
The council approved allowing Woinarowicz to accept applications for this position.
In other business, the council:
• Approved the Kennedy Fire Department updated bylaws.
“We had 42 calls last year,” reported Fireman Ethan Paulson. “We have filled out paperwork and applied for some grants.”
• Approved the annual designations, Resolution #2024-2, naming the Kittson County Enterprise as the official newspaper; KodaBank as the primary depository; Brink Lawyers as the city attorney; Acting Mayor and co-signer will be Escareno, and Councilor Jon Turn and Escareno were appointed to the personnel committee.
• Discussed a bill from Todd’s Electric regarding the work done at the bus garage and the shop area of the school. The council would like some details regarding the bill before approving payment.
• Reviewed 2023 budget versus actual numbers with income being $14,915.13 more than budgeted and expenses being $57,578.58 less than expected.
The council adjourned and will meet on Tuesday, March 12 in a special meeting since this is not the regular meeting night.
