By Coach Trent Jerome
The Kittson County Central Bearcats opened their season with a mix of commanding performances and nail-biting finishes. Starting with a strong victory over the Northern Freeze, KCC followed it up with close battles against Sacred Heart and East Grand Forks, as well as a solid road win at Roseau.

KCC 68 – NF 44
The Kittson County Central Bearcats began their season on Tuesday night, Dec. 3 with a road matchup against the Northern Freeze in Karlstad. Right from the opening tip, the Bearcats brought energy on both ends of the floor, setting the tone for a dominant performance.
Senior Ty Vig got things rolling offensively with a strong presence in the paint, while Brody Scalese knocked down a pair of early three-pointers to give KCC an early boost. On the defensive end, the Bearcats were locked in, holding the Freeze scoreless from the field until the 12:50 mark of the first half. Behind their smothering defense and balanced scoring, KCC built a commanding 37-20 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Bearcats continued to apply defensive pressure, turning stops into transition opportunities that helped extend their lead. The Northern Freeze made adjustments, managing to get Vig and sophomore Kellen Johnson into foul trouble, sending both players to the bench for stretches of the second half. However, the Bearcat reserves stepped up to hold the Freeze at bay. The Bearcats maintained control of the game, using their defense to fuel the offense and prevent the Freeze from cutting into the lead.
KCC closed out the night with a 68-44 victory.
Scoring: Kellen Johnson 19, Ty Vig 17, Brody Scalese 16, Eli Peterson 6, Brock Scalese 5, Keaton Brewer 5.

KCC 64 – SH 65
The Bearcats hosted Sacred Heart in Hallock for their home opener, which turned into a nail-biting contest. The Monday, Dec. 9 game began as a back-and-forth battle, with both teams finding success near the rim. Midway through the first half, Sacred Heart began to connect on tough jumpers, while KCC’s offense grew stagnant. The Eagles capitalized on the Bearcats’ cold shooting to take a 34-25 lead into halftime.
Sacred Heart continued their strong play to start the second half, extending their lead to as much as 13. However, the Bearcats found their spark through the efforts of senior Ty Vig and sophomore Kellen Johnson, who fueled an offensive surge that also brought life to KCC’s defense. Teammates rallied around their hot hands, creating opportunities and making stops. Slowly but surely, the Bearcats clawed their way back, taking a 51-50 lead with 6 minutes to play.
The final moments of the game were a back-and-forth battle, but with under a minute remaining and KCC holding a 4-point lead, a costly turnover gave Sacred Heart new life. The Eagles hit a tough three-pointer to cut the lead to 1 and then forced a missed free throw on the front end of a one-and-one. Sacred Heart held for the final shot and connected on a game-winning buzzer-beater to hand KCC a heartbreaking 65-64 loss.
Scoring: Ty Vig 31, Kellen Johnson 25, Brody Scalese 6, Brock Scalese 2.

KCC 70 – Roseau 52
The day after their heartbreaking loss to Sacred Heart, KCC traveled to Roseau for an inter-conference matchup against the AA Roseau Rams. The Bearcats wasted no time on Tuesday, Dec. 10 getting started as Brody Scalese knocked down an early three-pointer to spark the offense. The defense held strong early, slowing the Rams’ attack, but Roseau eventually found their rhythm to keep the game within 10 points.
Facing a packed Rams zone defense and cold three-point shooting, KCC adjusted by focusing on paint touches for higher-percentage looks. This strategy paid off as the Bearcats took a 39-30 lead into halftime.
The second half mirrored the first, with KCC continuing to struggle from beyond the arc while relying on finishes in the paint to maintain their lead. The Rams made a few key runs after consecutive stops, but they could never close the gap. Midway through the second half, the Bearcats’ offense caught fire, quickly putting the game out of reach.
Led by strong performances from Ty Vig, Brody Scalese and Kellen Johnson — each scoring 17 points or more — KCC defeated Roseau 70-52, rebounding from their previous loss.
