KCC 61 – Warroad 64
The Bearcats welcomed the 15-0 Warroad Warriors to Lancaster on Monday, Jan. 27, looking to hand the AA powerhouse their first loss of the season. Right from the opening tip, both teams came out firing, exchanging early baskets in what looked to be an exciting battle ahead.
KCC leaned on senior big man Ty Vig to establish an inside presence, while Warroad matched the pace with their own scoring attack. The Bearcats then turned up the pressure on defense, forcing the Warriors into tough spots and creating transition opportunities. Crisp passing opened up driving lanes and clean looks from beyond the arc, where Eli Peterson found success attacking the rim. KCC’s offensive execution helped them extend their lead to 38-27 at halftime.
Coming out of the break, KCC struck quickly, scoring inside with Vig to maintain momentum. But the Warriors weren’t going down quietly. Warroad cranked up their defensive intensity, forcing turnovers and capitalizing on Bearcat misses to claw their way back into the game.
Midway through the half, Warroad took the lead, setting up a back-and-forth battle down the stretch. As time wound down, Brock Scalese delivered in the clutch, burying a huge three-pointer to tie the game at 58-58. Warroad responded by drawing a foul and sinking both free throws, reclaiming a 60-58 advantage.
On the ensuing possession, Vig was sent to the line with a chance to tie but converted just 1, leaving the Bearcats down 60-59. KCC got the defensive stop they needed and had 24 seconds to take the lead. However, the Warriors’ defense forced a tough turnover, leading to free throws that extended their lead. One final costly turnover sealed the game, and Warroad escaped with a narrow 64-61 victory.
Scoring: Eli Peterson 16, Ty Vig 12, Brody Scalese 12, Kellen Johnson 12, Brock Scalese 6, James Cerkowniak 3.
KCC 72 – SH 57
On Thursday, Jan. 30, KCC traveled to East Grand Forks for a rematch against Sacred Heart, a team that had beaten them 65-64 at the buzzer in December.
The game started slow for KCC, as their offense took time to find its rhythm. However, their defense was locked in from the start, holding Sacred Heart’s talented offense in check. Sophomore Ashton Knutson got things rolling with a three-pointer, igniting the Bearcats’ scoring attack. Brody Scalese followed suit, knocking down key shots that forced Sacred Heart’s triangle-and-two defense to scramble. With the Eagles spread out, KCC capitalized inside, with Vig finishing strong at the rim and Peterson attacking on downhill drives.
Meanwhile, KCC’s zone defense frustrated Sacred Heart, forcing them into contested three-pointers. The Eagles managed to string together a late run, but the Bearcats still held a solid 32-24 lead at the half.
After the break, KCC continued to attack the Eagles’ defense, using Vig’s physicality in the paint to draw fouls and convert at the free-throw line. Scalese continued his sharpshooting, draining two more threes to give him 4 for the game. As KCC ramped up its defensive pressure, Sacred Heart struggled to take care of the ball, committing costly turnovers that allowed the Bearcats to extend their lead to as much as 20 points.
Both teams continued to battle down the stretch, but KCC never let up, maintaining control to close out a convincing 72-57 win over a conference opponent.
Scoring: Ty Vig 21, Brody Scalese 20, Eli Peterson 16, Kellen Johnson 7, Ashton Knutson 5, Brooks Nordin 3.
