Bearcat volleyball team defeats Stephen-Argyle Central in Stephen
By Coach Tina Turn
It was a hot and humid Tuesday, Sept. 16 when the Bearcats traveled south to Stephen to take on the SAC Storm in volleyball action. The two teams are both Northern Lights Confere-nce members, and it was their first meeting of the season.
In a quiet gym, KCC came out sharp from the service line, converting all 24 serves and tallying 4 aces on the way to a 25-15 opening set win. Kaydence White sparked the offense with 6 kills.
Set two told a different story. The Storm amped up their blocking and serving pressure, and with KCC struggling in serve receive, the Bearcats couldn’t find their offensive rhythm. Fifteen errors proved costly in a 21-25 setback.
KCC regrouped in set three, again serving a perfect 24-for-24. While they managed just 1 ace, the Bearcats kept errors to a minimum—only 5—and cruised to a clean 25-13 victory. Improved passing and smart hitting around the Storm’s block made all the difference.
The Bearcats closed the night with a decisive 25-14 win in set four. Despite 5 missed serves, just 2 hitting errors kept the Storm from gaining momentum. White punctuated the performance, tipping and swinging her way to 8 of her match-high 23 kills in the final set.
While it would have been ideal to finish in three sets, a win is still a win—and the Bearcats can take valuable lessons from their second-set stumble. Communication wasn’t their strongest asset in this matchup, yet in volleyball it’s every bit as critical as serving or passing when it comes to executing consistently. Even so, KCC delivered a solid overall performance and came away with a victory that pushes their season record to 8–3.
