One person is dead after a weekend shooting at a Karlstad residence.
At 1:11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, the Kittson County Sheriff’s Office received a call for service to the 4000 block of State Highway 11 in Karlstad. The person who called said an unknown person had entered their home, assaulted them and had taken their firearm. According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, dispatch heard a shot fired and the person who called in no longer responded to the 911 dispatcher.
Kittson County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene and found a deceased person with a firearm lying near the body. Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting Kittson County with its investigation. Tri-County Ambulance Services, Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol also responded to the scene.
As of Monday, the sheriff’s office and investigators do not believe there is an immediate threat to the public. Chief Deputy Dave Thompson is asking the public to be as patient as possible. Investigations take time and information will be released when it’s available.
“I know it’s hard to wait for official information,” Thompson said. “I also want to remind them that in Karlstad and Kittson County, we still live in a good, safe community.”
The body has been sent to the UND Forensic Pathology department for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Once the autopsy is complete and the family has been notified, the deceased’s identity will be released.
