KCC beats Fosston with grindout win
By Asst. Coach Mark Bernstrom
The Bearcats took on the Fosston Greyhounds in Lancaster on a rainy Friday afternoon, Sept. 15. Coaches knew this would be a challenge as the two teams have never played each other before. The story of this game was field possession and turnovers, and the Bearcats were able to win both parts of this in the game.
KCC got on the scoreboard first in the first quarter with a touchdown pass from Dylon Warnke to Gavin Johnson. The extra point was no good after the ball was placed back from a penalty. The Bearcats held a 6-0 lead after quarter one. The second quarter was impressive defensive play by both teams. Neither offense could sustain drives to move down the field. The first half ended with the Bearcats leading 6-0.
The second half was much of the same with both teams trying to find ways to move the ball. The Bearcat defense made numerous plays with 2 interceptions by Brock Scalese and 2 fumble recoveries – 1 by Braxton Wallenberg in the first half and 1 by Simon TerWee in the second half.
The biggest sequence of plays came in the fourth quarter. Ty Vig had a great punt to the sideline to pin Fosston down at the 2-yard line. Then the defense didn’t let them move the ball and Fosston punted it right back to give the Bearcats a short field. The offense moved the ball all the way down to the 1-yard line chewing up a lot of the clock. They capped off the drive with a Morgan Muir touchdown run and extra-point kick by Zander Anderson to take a 13-0 lead with under two minutes to go in the game.
With the ensuing kickoff, Fosston got the ball at midfield. They completed a deep ball and a few short quick ones to score with hardly any time taken off the clock. Fosston completed their 2-point conversion to cut the lead to 13-8. Muir recovered the onside kick from Fosston to secure the win and the offense got to finish in the victory formation. With the final score being 13-8.
This was also parents night and both varsity and junior high parents and players were recognized before the game and at half-time. Again, thank you to the parents and players for your support and commitment to the program. None of this is possible without you. The next game is on the road, as the Bearcats travel to Argyle to take on the Storm in another afternoon game on Friday, Sept. 22. Kick off is at 3:30 p.m.
