Bearcats fall to Falcons at Homecoming game
By Asst. Coach Mark Bernstrom
On Friday, Sept. 29, the Bearcats took on Fertile-Beltrami at home in Hallock. F-B is one of the top teams in 9-man football in the state. Everyone knew this was going to be a physical and tough game with this team coming in, and they showed it in the first half.
F-B received the ball to start the game, and the Bearcat defense made them earn every yard. F-B was able to sustain their drive with grinding out first downs. They did find the endzone and had a successful 2-point conversion to take the lead 8-0 early in the first. The next two possessions, F-B continued to find the endzone with 27 and 90-yard scoring runs to extend the lead 22-0 after the first quarter. It was much of the same in the second quarter as they added 3 more touchdowns to take a 41-0 lead into halftime over the Bearcats. Isaiah Wright for F-B scored 4 of those touchdowns in the first half.
After another score by F-B in the third quarter both sides started to sub down and gave their JV players a chance to play.
In the fourth quarter the Bearcats were finally able to get on the board with an 11-yard touchdown run by Eli Muir, and a successful 2-point conversion put 8 on the board. Then later in the quarter off a bad snap the punt was blocked and Kellen Johnson was able to pick up the fumble and run it in for the score. They successfully converted the 2 point conversion, and the final score ended up KCC 16 and F-B 55.
This is not what the team and fans wanted for a Homecoming game, but there are some positive things to look at when it was all said and done. The boys continued to fight and play the whole game, they came off the field overall healthy, and the JV players were able to get valuable playing time under the lights at thome.
The next football game is against Goodridge/Grygla in Goodridge on Friday, Oct. 6 at 3 p.m. This afternoon game is due to the refing shortage, and this crew having to do a game that night. If you’re able, come on out and cheer on the boys!
