Bearcat girls topple Gators

By Mark Johnson, coach

KCC 64 – BGMR 63
The Bearcats girls played their first home game of the season last Monday, Dec. 4 against conference foe and rival the BGMR Gators. The fans from both communities were treated to a competitive, edge-of-your-seat game.
KCC held control of the game for most of the first half of play. The Gators had single possession leads in the opening minutes of the game and midway through the first half, but the Bearcats kept the advantage on the scoreboard for most of the first half. When KCC created pace and tempo they stretched their lead, but the Gators were resilient and never let the Bearcats get out of reach.
The Bearcats offense struggled in the first half only making 7 of 33 shots from the field, but they made 10 free throws in the opening half. The Bearcat defense was the difference in the first half as they held the Gators to only 22 points and KCC held a 25-22 lead at the half.
The second half started with the Gators making a quick run to take a lead, but it was short lived as the Bearcats responded, regained their advantage and never trailed for the remainder of the game.
KCC pushed their lead to as much as 9 points with about 6 minutes left to play in the game. The Gators had one more run in them and they drew the game even in the final minute of play. A free throw by KCC put them up 64-63.
KCC followed that free throw with a steal on the inbounds play that took another possession off the clock for the Gators. The Bearcats made the plays they needed to make down the stretch on the defensive side of the ball and had just enough offense to capture the 64-63 win.
These are the kinds of games that are fun for all of us. Players, fans and coaches all got to enjoy and watch two teams compete and get after each other. The girls showed a toughness and played through some momentum shifts during the game. We did a good job of controlling most of the game and showed the resilience to finish the deal at the end of the contest.
