KCC hockey takes tough losses in the new year

Grafton/PR 7 vs. KCC 0
After getting third place in the Ely Holiday tournament, the KCC Bearcats went into the new year 2-9 after finding their second win of the season against St. Paul Johnson.
Starting off the new year, KCC played Grafton/Park River on Tuesday, Jan. 2. The Bearcats held the score of 0-0 for 10 minutes into the first period until G/PR’s James Larson scored the first goal of the night. While the Bearcats were unable to do much of anything, Larson’s goal kicked off G/PR’s 6 straight unanswered goals, finishing the game off for a Bearcat loss of 7-0.

Bagley/Foss. 7 vs. KCC 3
With the tough loss to Grafton/Park River, the Bearcats went on to play Bagley/Fosston at home on Thursday, Jan. 4. The Bearcats came out hard as Morgan Muir scored the first goal of the game.
At the start of the second period, B/F started strong with a goal 2 minutes into the period, until Eli Muir answered them with a power play goal. Halfway through the second period, Jameson Turner suffered a lower body injury. David Kaul backed Turner up as goalie for KCC. B/F’s Conner Nelson and Logan Dillich both scored even strength goals to put the Flyers up 4-2. Not until KCC’s Wyatt Samuelson scored a power play goal to make it a 4-3 game. After Samuelson’s goal, the Bearcats went on to let up 3 more goals. Bagley/Fosston defeated KCC 7-3.

Park Rapids 8 vs. KCC 2
KCC’s final matchup of the week took place in Hallock against the Park Rapids Panthers. The Bearcats had a tough match up going into the game due to dealing with injuries and illness.
The Panthers showed dominance right off the bat by scoring 2 back-to-back goals in the start of the first period. Not until Isaac Gustafson scored on a break-away opportunity to make it a 2-1 game. Following Gustafson’s goal, Morgan Muir was able to find the back of the net to tie up the first period. With 2 minutes left in the first, PR’s Kale Ravnaas scored their leading goal to put the Panthers up 3-2 going into the second period.
After the first period, the Bearcats were unable to put any more points on the board, and gave up 5 more goals to the Panthers with a final score of 8-2.
