Bearcats boys basketball win three, lose one in the new year

KCC 61 – G-G 63
Chargers The KCC Bearcats opened the new year with a nail-biter on Thursday, Jan. 4 against the Goodridge-Grygla Chargers. Ty Vig led the charge with an early basket and a three-pointer for the Bearcats. G-G was quick to respond, setting the tone for a game that was tightly contested throughout.
The first half saw both teams trading buckets, with neither side able to establish a lead greater than 5 points. Heading into halftime, KCC held a slim margin of 29-27.
The second half was equally competitive, but Grygla Goodridge edged out in the final minutes, taking a 58-52 lead. However, KCC fought back to tie the game, but a foul in the final moments allowed the Chargers to clinch a 63-61 victory.

KCC 92 – LOW 18
Undeterred by the previous day’s loss, the Bearcats returned home Friday, Jan. 5 to face the Lake of the Woods Bears. Simon TerWee kickstarted the scoring with a swift three-pointer, signaling a dominant night for KCC. The Bearcats excelled in scoring from all areas and stifled the Bears’ offense.
By halftime, KCC had built an overwhelming 51-8 lead.
The second half saw no letup in intensity, leading to a commanding 92-18 victory, with 10 Bearcats contributing to the scoreboard.

KCC 70 – Warroad 69
The Bearcats traveled to Warroad Tuesday, Jan. 9 to take on the Warriors. Ty Vig’s early contributions helped KCC to build a lead, but the Warriors responded fiercely. Kellen Johnson’s impressive three-point shooting played a crucial role in maintaining KCC’s advantage, leading to a 34-30 lead at halftime.
The second half saw KCC extending their lead, but the Warriors fought back, narrowing the gap. In a tense final minute, Brody Scalese’s free throws and a crucial defensive possession secured a hard-fought 70-69 win for the Bearcats.
Scoring: Kellen Johnson 24, Ty Vig 17, Brody Scalese 13, Eli Peterson 8, Brock Scalese 2, Dylon Warnke 2.

KCC 73 – BGMR 55
Back on their home court, the Bearcats faced the BGMR Gators on Friday, Jan. 12. Ty Vig once again opened the scoring, and despite an early three-pointer from the Gators, KCC built a solid lead through effective inside scoring and capitalizing on turnovers. Kellen Johnson’s versatility was on display, contributing significantly both inside and from the perimeter. Leading 38-22 at halftime, KCC maintained their rhythm in the second half, ultimately securing a 73-55 victory.
