Bearcats defeat Storm and Gators on the road

By Mark Johnson, coach
KCC 64 – SAC 52
The Bearcats went back on the road last week. Monday evening, Jan. 22, they rolled down Highway 75 to Argyle to face the Stephen-Argyle Storm in a Northern Galaxy Confer-ence matchup. The two teams had played just prior to the holiday break with KCC getting the upper hand 67-57.
The first half of the rematch was a battle. The Bearcats led early and got out to a 14-8 lead and looked like they may be able to put some distance between the two teams on the scoreboard. The Storm had a different plan and went on a 11-4 run over the middle portion of the first half to take a 19-18 lead with 5:01 left in the half. The Storm continued to hang tough and pushed that lead to 30-25 with just under a minute to play, but it was KCC’s turn to respond. The Bearcats trimmed the Storm lead to 30-28 on a steal and bucket as time ran out on the first half of play.
The Bearcats opened the second half with a 10-2 run and took a 38-32 lead. KCC held the lead for the remainder of the game. The Storm made a handful of runs that trimmed it to single possession leads, but the Bearcats would keep responding and push the lead back out to multiple possessions. Down the stretch the Bearcats started to stretch out their lead with aggressive offensive play and a more concerted defensive effort. KCC finished out the game and captured the 64-52 win over the Storm.
It was a scrappy game. We had a hard time shaking the Storm. They kept coming at us and we just couldn’t get a consistency going on either end of the floor. There was a lot of stoppage of play, and a ton of free throws attempted. It just made for a very discombobulated game. The girls found a way to fight through that type of game and came out on the right side of the ledger. They hung tough and showed their mettle.

KCC 60 – BGMR 47
KCC headed east on Thursday night, Jan. 25 for a rematch against the BGMR Gators in Greenbush. The Gators and Bearcats faced off in early December in Lancaster with KCC holding off the Gators for a 64-63 win.
The Bearcats started the game strong and possession by possession built a nice lead. KCC held a 20-7 lead with about 7 minutes to play in the first half. They built that lead to 15 points just before the half ended, but a late turnover led to a foul and a set of three free throws for the Gators to close the gap to 32-20 at halftime.
The Bearcats struggled to keep their momentum going in the second half and the Gators kept chipping away at KCC’s lead. With 5:55 left in the game the Bearcats only held a one-point lead at 42-41. KCC refocused and took control of the game down the stretch and went on a 18-6 run to close out the contest and notch the 60-47 win over the Gators. The win moved the Bearcats’ record to 12-3 for the season.
It is always a tough place to get a win when you play at the opposing team’s place. You know they are always going to make a run at you. The question is, can you withstand those runs and make some of your own? We did that and the girls did a great job of finishing the game.
