Bearcat girls basketball team defeat Eagles on the road, Falcons at home

By Mark Johnson, coach
KCC 71 – SH 63
The Bearcats headed south to East Grand Forks Monday, Feb. 12 to tangle with the Sacred Heart Eagles in their home gym. A win would position either team for the top seed in the sub-section tournament as well as give them control of the Northern Galaxy Conference.
KCC scored on the opening tip of the game and took an early 2-0 lead. The two teams battled on both ends of the floor scratching and clawing for every advantage the teams could gain. The game remained tight for much of the first half. The Bearcats built a 30-24 lead with about 5:25 left in the first half, but timely three-point baskets kept the Eagles close.
Sacred Heart took a 34-33 lead with 1:17 left in the first half. KCC answered and finished the last minute of play on a 7-1 run to hold a 40-35 halftime lead.
The Bearcats came out of the locker room on a mission to start the second half. KCC’s defense stymied the Eagle offense, and the Bearcats pushed their lead out to 16 points by the 10:03 mark of the half at 57-41. Sacred Heart was not going to go away without a fight, though. The Eagles slowly picked at the Bearcat lead and trimmed it to 67-63 with 46 seconds left in the game. KCC held serve and knocked down free throws to close out the game and take over control of the conference and sub section seedings with a 71-63 win.
We played a complete game. It wasn’t perfect, but it never will be with two good teams squaring off with each other. We were very active and aware on defense and put a lot of stress on their offense. The girls did a great job of staying in attack mode and never wavered in their focus and intensity.

KCC 78 – F-B 60
The Bearcats returned home Thursday, Feb. 15 for a double header game with the boys against the Fertile-Beltrami Falcons. The evening featured United Valley Bank and the Duane Lyberg family sponsoring a scholarship program and providing free popcorn for all in attendance. Fans were treated to both popcorn and an impressive showing by the Bearcats.
The teams tangled for a bit in the opening minutes of the game with KCC holding a slight 8-6 lead. The Bearcats went on a 13-2 run however and took control of the game in a heartbeat. KCC continued to attack the Falcon defense and kept putting points on the board. The Bearcat defense kept the Falcon offense in difficult scoring situations, but the Falcons kept knocking down late shot clock three-pointers to keep the game from being a runaway contest. KCC held a 40-28 lead at the half.
The Bearcats controlled the second half of action much like the first half and never wavered in holding onto their lead. KCC cruised the 78-60 win and moved their season record to 19-4.

Scoring leaders: Greta Kuznia 20, Morgan Turn 19, Kaydence White 14, Ellen Hilman 10, Afton Lindgren 6, Hanna Warnke 4, Berlyn Strege 4, Aliyah Vig 1
