KCC football team falls in hard-fought game at Fosston

By Nick Johnson, assistant coach
KCC 27 — Fosston 32
After a 2-0 start to the season, the Kittson County Central Bearcats suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Fosston Greyhounds on Friday, Sept. 13. A thriller from kickoff until the final whistle, the Bearcats learned many lessons from the 32-27 defeat at Fosston.
After each team’s first possessions produced little, Fosston took control of the game on their second possession. A 13-play, 60-yard drive finished off with a 10-yard touchdown run by Ryne Duppong gave the Greyhounds a 6-0 lead. Fosston added to their lead with a 2-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jacob Rudie, jumping out to a 12-0 lead.
The Bearcats responded with a touchdown drive of their own, with a 1-yard touchdown run by Ashton Knutson. Keaton Brewer cut the lead to 12-7 with an extra point kick. The momentum did not remain on the Bearcats’ side, as Rudie connected with Duppong on a 26-yard touchdown pass. The Greyhounds took an 18-7 lead into halftime, leaving the Bearcats to make adjustments or face the possibility of a blowout loss.
The Bearcats responded in a big way in the second half and the remainder of the game was a heavy-weight fight, with both teams taking punches and responding with blows of their own. The Bearcats cut the lead to 18-14 on a 14-yard touchdown run by Eli Muir. On their next defensive possession the Bearcats got the stop they needed, but were unable to take the lead on their next offensive possession, turning the ball over on downs.
Fosston extended their lead with another scoring drive, ending with Duppong scoring his third touchdown of the night. His 3-yard run gave the Greyhounds a 26-14 lead, which only lasted for one play as Knutson provided a much needed boost for the Bearcats with a 93-yard kickoff return touchdown, trimming the lead to 26-21.
However, neither team was down there. Fosston added one final score on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jacob Rudie. Trailing 32-21 the Bearcats faced an uphill battle to come from behind in the game. They faced that challenge head on, cutting into the lead yet again on a 6-yard touchdown run by Knutson, set up by a 51-yard pass from Eli Peterson to Gavin Johnson to convert on fourth down.
After forcing a turnover on downs by the Greyhounds, the Bearcats had yet another shot to win the game. With just a few minutes left in the game and no timeouts remaining, the Bearcats made one final drive. They nearly completed the comeback, driving inside the Fosston 20-yard line before an interception sealed the game for the Greyhounds.
The final score of 32-27 does not tell the whole story of the unbelievable contest that took place in Fosston Friday night. While defeat is never a satisfying feeling, the Bearcats showed incredible resolve, continually battling back after falling behind early in the game. The loss to the Greyhounds drops the Bearcats to 2-1 on the season.
The team will need to get back to work quickly to prepare for an important clash with the Storm of Stephen-Argyle Central coming up in Hallock on Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
