KCC 61 – WAO 41
The Kittson County Central Bearcats are making noise in the Section 8 playoffs after securing back-to-back wins.
Entering the tournament as the No. 4 seed, KCC faced off against the No. 5-seeded Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Ponies in a highly anticipated rubber match at the University of Minnesota Crookston on Thursday, March 6. The two teams had split their regular-season meetings, with WAO taking the first contest in December and KCC earning a convincing win at home in February.
The playoff showdown between KCC and WAO started as a tightly contested battle, with both teams trading early baskets, including a couple of three-pointers that hinted at an offensive shootout.
However, KCC’s defense took center stage as the half progressed, stifling the Ponies’ attack. Sophomore Eli Peterson provided a spark for the Bearcats, helping his team build a 14-7 lead midway through the first half.
WAO responded by slowing down KCC’s offense and clawing their way back, turning the game into a defensive battle. At the half, KCC held a slim 20-19 lead.
Coming out of the break, junior Brock Scalese wasted no time, knocking down a three-pointer to set the tone for the second half. The Bearcats ramped up their defensive intensity, and their offense came alive. Senior big man Ty Vig became a focal point inside, allowing KCC to punish the Ponies with an inside-out attack. While WAO made small runs, sophomore Ashton Knutson’s hustle plays and defensive pressure kept them at bay, forcing multiple turnovers.
KCC’s ball movement and balanced scoring proved too much for WAO, and the Bearcats pulled away late, closing out a 61-41 victory to punch their ticket to the Section 8 quarterfinals against top-seeded Cass Lake-Bena.
Scoring: Ty Vig 20, Brock Scalese 14, Eli Peterson 10, Kellen Johnson 9, Brody Scalese 8.
KCC 78 – CL-B 47
Facing a new challenge in Cass Lake-Bena, a team the boys had not met during the regular season, the Bearcats stepped onto the court at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls prepared for battle on Saturday, March 8. Cass Lake-Bena Panthers, the No. 1 seed in the Section 8 East Subsection, came out strong with quick baskets, but once KCC settled in, they took control.
The Bearcats erupted on a 13-2 run, turning an early deficit into a commanding 13-4 lead. The Panthers fought back with a barrage of three-pointers to stay within striking distance, but KCC’s composure never wavered. The Bearcats’ defense held strong, limiting Cass Lake-Bena to just 22 first-half points, while their own offensive efficiency gave them a 34-22 halftime lead.
KCC carried that momentum into the second half, coming out with lockdown defense and solid execution on offense. The Bearcats quickly extended their lead to 45-22, putting the No. 1 seed in a deep hole. As the Panthers tried to apply defensive pressure, KCC stayed poised, using crisp ball movement to create open looks and capitalize on scoring opportunities.
The Bearcats continued their relentless pace, ultimately securing a 78-47 victory, a statement win that sends them into the Section 8 semifinals against Fertile-Beltrami on Wednesday, March 12 at 7:45 p.m. at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls.
Scoring: Ty Vig 30, Kellen Johnson 15, Eli Peterson 14, Brody Scalese 11, Brock Scalese 3, James Cerkowniak 3, Ashton Knutson 2.
