Bearcats boys defeat Falcons, fall to Rebels in playoffs

By Coach Trent Jerome
On Wednesday, March 12, the Kittson County Central Bearcats returned to the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls, hungry for redemption in the Section 8A semifinals against the Fertile-Beltrami Falcons — a team that defeated them earlier in the season, 61-52. This time, it was different. The Bearcats were locked in.
After an early exchange of baskets, senior Ty Vig set the tone for the Bearcats, answering a pair of Falcon free throws with strong play inside. KCC began to build momentum midway through the first half, stretching their lead behind hot perimeter shooting and sharp execution. A 14-7 run gave the Bearcats a 32-21 edge heading into the break.
KCC came out of halftime firing on all cylinders. Vig once again led the charge with a dominant stretch, sparking a 9-3 run to push the lead even further. With a commanding 53-34 advantage midway through the second half, it looked like the Bearcats were in full control.
But the Falcons weren’t done. Applying full-court pressure, they forced a string of turnovers and clawed their way back to within 10 points, 56-46. Yet, KCC remained composed in the final stretch. Breaking the press and converting key possessions down the stretch, the Bearcats secured a 67-51 victory to punch their ticket to the Section 8A championship game.
Two days later, on Friday, March 14, KCC returned to the Ralph to face the Red Lake County Rebels — a familiar opponent. The two teams had split their regular-season meetings, with the Rebels winning the first by four and the Bearcats taking the North Star Conference Championship with a 10-point win.
This rubber match was for the biggest prize yet — a trip to the state tournament.
Junior Brody Scalese got things started with a deep three, followed by another triple from Ty Vig. Red Lake County answered right back and kept things tight. KCC maintained a slight edge throughout much of the first half, building a lead as large as nine at 20-11. The Rebels, however, made a late push to cut it to 28-25 at halftime.
The second half began with fireworks — both teams trading threes early — but it was Red Lake County that seized the momentum. A blistering shooting display saw the Rebels hit 6 of their first 8 three-point attempts in the second half. Coupled with a relentless full-court press, the Bearcats struggled to find offensive rhythm or composure, and the lead quickly ballooned to 51-36.
Though KCC battled to stay in it, the Rebels’ hot hand continued. Three more triples closed the door on a comeback, and the Bearcats fell 68-40. Red Lake County went on to take third place at the Class A State Tournament.
Despite the heartbreaking end, the Bearcats closed out an unforgettable season with a 22-8 overall record, a North Star Conference Championship, and a Section 8A runner-up finish — their deepest playoff run in years and a testament to the team’s growth, grit and belief.
