Final Jerry Wilson Run brings out 130 participants

By Kristi Steen
The 22nd Annual Jerry Wilson Memorial Run was held on Saturday, June 28. This event is held in memory of Jerry Wilson, a Lancaster native, who ran marathons and trained others to run marathons, but who mostly encouraged people to live life to the fullest. He was an encourager, and he cheered you on no matter what goal it was that you were crushing! He loved to see people of all ages, shapes and sizes out jogging, running or sprinting, and setting new goals.
On the run day, we are often caught yelling out two of his favorite catch phrases: “Way to go!” and “You’re way above average!” It is with true joy that we honor him each year with this run.
The funds that this run and the meals have provided allowed us to be able to finish the ice rink and warming house, and to raise funds for the playground equipment at the ball diamond. This year’s funds will either help with more playground equipment or go toward other things to help the youth of our community, as Jerry loved children.
This year, our run took place during the 105th Lancaster School All School Reunion, and we weren’t sure how numbers would be with all of the activities! However, the numbers were high, and the enthusiasm and joy were even higher. Pastor Galen Nordin started off the event with a beautiful prayer. We were super thankful for all of the volunteers over the 22 years that we have remembered Jerry with this run.
We had 130 participants, which includes the 5k run, 5k walk, 10k run and youth run.
This may be the final Jerry Wilson run, but we are hopeful that some other healthy enthusiast will take it over so our community can continue to move.
As Jerry always said, “Anyone can run. If you can run three, you can run six. If you can run six, you can run 12.” (You get the idea!) Each young runner received a coupon for a cone at W’s Diner.
