Hallock Area Community Fund accepting Gifts of Grain
The Hallock Area Community Fund will again accept Gifts of Grain this fall during harvest.
This fundraiser was started by the group in 2019 with a push to match a large donation from the Blue Stem Foundation with the focus being on refurbishing the kiddie pool at the Hallock Pool.
That year with rent-free, borrowed equipment, including a seed card with a scale, a three-quarter ton pickup and semi grain trailer, nearly $25,000 worth of grain was collected in the fields by Community Fund members.
The goal this year is $20,000.
In 2024, farmers donated $12,873 worth of grain at North Prairie Ag Elevator. In 2023, farmers donated $17,031 worth of grain.
“The Gifts of Grain program for the Community Fund is a very instrumental way for the committee to raise funds for many of the on going projects in the community, said Dan Younggren, of Younggren Farms, Hallock. “It has been our belief that giving a commodity to the committee is a great way for our farm to be a part of building a strong community footprint up and down main street and throughout the area. We are happy to be a part of this and look forward to many more years of donating.”
Gifts of Grain increases the fund’s grant application rounds from only one per year to two per year — one in the spring and another in the fall. The group has been giving out about $10,000 each round to the applicants.
There are many needs in this small community and the Community Fund’s mission is to help satisfy those needs through funding grants for eligible charities and local governments. Having donations come in through Gifts of Grain at a higher level each year would be a great trend to have but we all know the economics of farming and the weather’s impact to crop yields is always a factor.
