4-H continues to inspire local youth through national event

Tasting honey and determining its pollination origins is not a job for Laura Schmideberg, but it’s an experience she’ll never forget. The Kittson County 4-Her was one of only 20 Minnesota 4-Hers who attended the organization’s national Ignite Conference in Washington, D.C., March 25-29.
While Schmiedeberg focused on the animal science track during the conference, she chose to attend a workshop about honey.
“We got to taste all different kinds of honey and guess what kind of flowers and stuff the bees pollinated,” she said. “None of us did very well on our guesses.”
What is in her future is animal science, specifically veterinary technician. Another workshop she attended was led by keynote speaker Dr. Hake, the Calf Vet. She shared a lot of information that resonated with Schmiedeberg about entering a profession caring for animals.
“I liked hearing about the challenges she faced and how she got through them,” Schmiedeberg said.
