Hallock Council hires intern for summer office work

By Anna Jauhola
The Hallock City Council approved the city office to host an intern this summer to help fill in while the city clerk/administrator is on leave. The council met in a special meeting on Thursday, May 14 to make this and other decisions, with all councilors present and the mayor absent.
Morgan Muir, a Kittson Central graduate, will graduate from Minnesota State University Moorhead next spring with his accounting degree. To graduate, he needs to complete an internship. He wrote a letter to the city and its council, making the request. Muir is also the city’s summer baseball coach.
“We are in a little bit of need of help in this office, so that maybe will kind of kill two birds with one stone,” said Kendra Kroening, city clerk/administrator.
Kroening is currently in the city office to work on the city’s annual audit with the auditor. However, she will go on leave once the audit is complete.
Kroening said they had summer employee, Megan Larson, assist in the office previously in the summer, so this isn’t a new development.
“So I would just coordinate what needs to be done in the office that’s accounting related like doing bank reconciliations … any kind of journal entries, things like that,” Kroening said.
The internship would be between 10 and 15 hours a week, as Muir needs 200 hours to submit for graduation. Kroening said she has been in contact with his adviser from MSUM, so everything is set up for the internship.
The council approved the internship and to pay Muir the same hourly wage he receives as summer baseball coach, which is $17.44 per hour.
