Kittson Central Board considers new graduation timelines, math credits
By Jack Waters
Kittson Central School Board met May 20 with discussions around a possibility of an earlier senior graduation timeline and whether to increase graduation credit requirements for high school mathematics. They also set a spending allowance for the administration.
Interim Superintendent Wade Johnson introduced a proposal to allow high school seniors to complete their academic year one week earlier than the rest of the student body. “We’d graduate seniors a week early and get them out of here so we can tend to business with our other kids. I think it’s a really good idea. I’m going to bring this up in June for a vote,” said Johnson, who further said some schools in the state, like Marshall County Central, currently use the option to focus on administrative tasks.
Per Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) requirements on needing a specific dollar amount, the board unanimously established a $25,000 cap on unilateral capital purchases by the administration. Any financial item exceeding that value without preapproval will require formal board authorization. Johnson said the MSBA needs an actual number and the administration needs some ability to streamline daily school operational needs without being held up by the approval process while also maintaining fiscal oversight.
