County board hires part-time, temporary sheriff’s deputy after much discussion

By Anna Jauhola
Kittson County Commis-sioners approved hiring one part-time deputy, and tabled hiring another during their regular meeting on Tuesday, June 16.
In May, Sheriff Matt Vig asked to advertise for a part-time sheriff’s deputy position, not to exceed 24 hours a week to help offset the amount of overtime paid to the full-time deputies. Two internal candidates applied for the position, and Vig brought both possibilities to the board for consideration.
“I’ve got Kayleen Kjelland and Jaacks Spilde who both applied. They’re good employees. They’re qualified,” Vig said. “So my request to you, as I know before we spoke about hiring one, but my request is could we hire both of them?”
Vig said Kjelland is currently a full-time dispatcher, and Spilde is part-time. He said, should there be a deputy shift to cover, it would depend on who is scheduled to work dispatch. He said should Kjelland take a deputy shift, she would be paid an overtime rate as she is full-time. However, that rate is significantly lower, he said.
