Peter H. Mortenson, 78, Kennedy, Minn., passed away at his home Friday, July 13, 2018.
Peter Hebert Mortenson was born Nov. 30, 1939 in Hallock, Minn., to Herbert and Helen (Warnes) Mortenson. He was baptized and confirmed in Red River Lutheran Church and grew up in Svea Township of Kittson, County. Peter graduated from Kennedy High School in 1959. He graduated from Northland Community Technical College, Thief River Falls, Minn.
Peter married Doris Humes July 14, 1962 in Trinity Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls. They settled in Svea Township and farmed until Peter’s retirement in 1997, but never really left the farm. Peter and Doris moved into Kennedy in 2001. Peter was a lifelong member of Red River Lutheran Church and served on the church board. Peter loved life, his family, friends, farming, and the Red River community in which he lived. He was especially proud of his grandchildren and treasured time with them. Peter and Doris enjoyed travel. They wintered in San Diego and divided summers between Kennedy and their lake home in Bemidji.
Family members include his wife, Doris; a son, Richard Peter (Shannon) Mortenson, Kennedy, daughter, Jill Mortenson (Dr. Erik) Holten, Fargo, N.D.; grandchildren, Paige and James Peter “J.P.” Mortenson, Cecelia, Anna Karel and Samuel Holten; brothers, Charles (Jan) Mortenson and Dean Mortenson both of Kennedy; a sister, Diane Brettingen, Jamestown, N.D.; a brother-in-law, Walt Lizakowski, Princeton, Minn., and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sondra Lizakowski.
Memorial services are scheduled for Monday, July 23, 2018 at 11 a.m. in Red River Lutheran Church, rural Kennedy. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Red River Lutheran Church Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Rev. Frank Johnson, presiding; Kate Johnson, soloist and Renee Wahl, organist. Honorary pall bearers will be Peter’s grandchildren.
