Gary Lee Burton, 82

Gary Lee Burton, 82, of Lancaster, Minn., passed away at Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center in Hallock on Monday, June 26, 2023.
Gary was born in Pattonsburg, Mo., on Feb. 24, 1941, to Lester and Fern (Canfield) Burton.
Gary attended school in Pattonsburg and graduated from there in 1959. On Sept. 4, 1959, Gary was united in marriage with his long-time sweetheart, Leah Eberle, at their home, with Leah’s grandmother Ethel Cooper presiding. Gary and Leah began their lives together in Missouri where Gary worked on various farms and for the State of Missouri Highway Department.
In 1968, when Gary took a job with Great Lakes Gas, Gary and Leah packed up three small children and moved to Lancaster, Minn. Upon moving to Minnesota, Gary worked at Great Lakes Gas, A&B Locker Plant, Midland/Red Owl, Morrison Equipment, C&M Farm Equipment, Big A, and C&M Ford. Gary also tried his hand at selling motorcycles and snowmobiles when he opened his own shop. He worked until 2020 as a car salesman at C&M Ford in Hallock. Gary was the city clerk for Lancaster for many years.
He and Leah were involved in the Lancaster Lions Club where he earned the prestigious Melvin B Jones award, and volunteered many hours at the golf course. In the early years of their marriage, they enjoyed square and round dancing and were members of the North Star Square Dance Club. Gary and Leah were members of the Sion Lutheran Church in Lancaster.
Throughout the years, Gary and Leah enjoyed traveling the country with family and wonderful friends. Gary loved to quail and turkey hunt in Missouri, pheasant hunt in North Dakota, and sharptail and deer hunt locally with his sons and friends. He and Leah enjoyed many snowmobile trips with a great group of friends, remaining in contact still today. Gary also kept in touch with his Missouri family, friends and classmates and traveled there as often as he could.
Gary and Leah had four children; Shirley Anne (Leland) Swenson, Donald Lee (Jen) Burton, Patrick Kyle (Donna) Burton, and Melinda Susan (Randy) Coffield. After Leah passed away in 2010, Gary enjoyed spending time with special friend, Joyce Glad. Gary lived with Joyce until February of 2023, when he moved to Kittson Memorial Healthcare.
Gary is preceded in death by his wife, Leah Burton, his parents Lester and Fern Burton and his mother and father-in-law Francyl and Shorty Eberle.
Gary is survived by his sister, Barbara and Charlie Reed of Overland Park, Kan., children Shirley and Leland Swenson (Lancaster), Donald and Jen Burton (Lancaster), Pat and Donna Burton (Pembina, N.D.) and Mendy and Randy Coffield (Lake Bronson, Minn.), his grandchildren Amber and Guillermo Gamez (Grand Forks, N.D.), Lacey and Lance Lupien (Lancaster), Tyler and Brittany Swenson (Lancaster), Cody Swenson and Taryn (Lancaster); Courtney and James Hauert (Lancaster), Lynnaea and Matheus Soares (East Grand Forks, Minn.), Nathan Rice (Watford City, N.D.), Kayla and Travis Walden (Grand Forks), Samantha and Chris Aragon (Fargo, N.D.), Whitney and Josh Carr (Lake Bronson), Brady and Hayley Coffield (Lake Bronson), Trevor and Grace Coffield (Lake Bronson). Great grandchildren Jazmyn Raysor, Angel Gamez, Lincoln and Leah Lupien, Mason and Rhett Swenson, Kane, Jagger and Avery Swenson, Nolan and Cole Hauert, Paityn and Karleigh Walden, Dakota and Izabela Aragon, Parker, Easton, Colton and Baylor Carr, and Iris, Livi, and Sutton Coffield. Gary’s family will be blessed with three more great grandchildren this year. Gary is also survived by his brother-in-law John Eberle, and special friend, Joyce Glad.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 30 at 2:00 p.m. at Sion Lutheran Church, Lancaster. Visitation was held at the church for one hour prior to the service. Rev. Andy Graves, presiding; Renee Wahl, organist. Pallbearers: Tyler and Cody Swenson, Brady and Trevor Coffield. Honorary Pallbearers: Gary’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren and Gary’s C&M Ford family. Interment was in Riverview Memorial Garden Cemetery, Lancaster.
