Lancaster Board approves higher levy, budget deficit

Lancaster Superintendent Nicole Thompson presented the district’s Truth in Taxation meeting during the regular school board meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 17.
No one from the public attended.
Thompson explained that several components go into setting the school tax levy, including a state funding formula and voter-approved referendums. She touched on the fact that funding from the state is trailing inflation.
“There’s definitely a gap,” Thompson said. “Education is not fully funded through the state and the inflation is not meeting up to what the costs are. That’s why so many schools are asking for referendums now.”
The board approved the final levy for the 2025-2026 school year of $899,970. This is an increase of $31,920 over the previous year.
