County Commission approves highway equipment parts, purchases

Ahead of the warm season, the Kittson County Highway Department is working to ensure its equipment is all in good condition. County Engineer Arthur Kukowski visited the regular county commission meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 17 for approval to buy parts and equipment.
The highway department’s gravel retriever’s inner workings need work.
“Virtually, the frame is fine, but all of the internals need to be rebuilt,” Kukowski said. “All of the discs and several of the bearing were at a decent point in their life, so while we have it all apart, we just figured we’d get those bearings and everything, so the machine is essentially brand new.”
The quote for those parts came out to $4,894.78, with approximately $200 for freight. Kukowski said the freight cost is an estimate, and could be less or more.
Commissioner Loren Younggren asked how old the gravel retriever is, but Kukowski wasn’t sure and didn’t want to be totally off with a guess. He did say, however, this is the first time it’s been rebuilt, so it’s older.
