Board approves advertising for part-time sheriff’s deputy

The county recently approved advertising for a part-time sheriff’s deputy position.
Sheriff Matt Vig visited with the commissioners during the Tuesday, May 18 meeting to discuss this need.
“Right now, we’re filling shifts with our full-timers at an overtime rate and sometimes the shifts aren’t getting filled because people appreciate their time off on the weekends,” Vig said. “So, we have two people working, one part-time and one full-time in dispatch right now. One’s post-license and one’s going to be post-license in the first part of June. So we have two people that we could utilize right here in the sheriff’s office.”
The lower rate for part-time deputies would be about $32 an hour, he said.
The personnel committee noted that any part-time deputy won’t go over a 24-hour threshold for weekly hours, and this would be a temporary, six-month position. This will be a fill-in type position only, and would not be eligible for benefits.
“The main thing is that you guys are responsible to try and keep this under 24 hours (a week) if you want to make this position work,” said Commissioner Loren Younggren.
Vig also noted that several full-time deputies have a lot of time off built up, and some have taken “paid in lieu” of time off. The commission agreed the county should save money by having part-time deputies fill in at a lower rate, which Vig said is half of the overtime rate.
